I was recently invited to open a meeting of the Tahlequah City Council in prayer. What follows is the invocation given at their February 1 meeting:
O Spirit of Holiness …
… who has breathed into our being the gift of life;
grant us thankful hearts that we might be respectful of your graciousness,
and open our eyes that we might see the magnitude of that gift,
in the multitude of earth’s people.
O Divine Presence …
… who calls us to life together in community;
grant us wisdom to be the arbiters of your justice,
as we inhabit this space you have given us to share,
from the ends of the earth, to the ends of our city.
O Guiding One …
… who offers us wisdom for our journey;
grant us thoughtful minds to carry out the business of the people,
providing equitably for the needs of our community,
that all might receive a fullness of life.
This we ask,
as humbly we pray.
Amen.
